Are Hollywood Rom-Coms a lost genre?
*Disclaimer – This is a rant *
Where It All Started:
I’m not sure why, but for the past week or so I’ve had the strongest urge to watch the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan movie You’ve Got Mail. You could almost call it a craving and I can’t even explain why this movie has been calling me back.
Have you had such a desire before? Wanting to re-watch an old movie & relive the experience? I hope so, because that will make me feel less of a weirdo
So You’ve Got Mail got me thinking of other such romantic comedy movies, how well they were made & most importantly how immensely enjoyable they were! Here are some super entertaining rom-com movies off the top of my head…
|You’ve Got Mail||1998|
|10 Things I Hate About You||1999|
|Never Been Kissed||1999|
|She’s All That||1999|
|Fifty First Dates||2004|
|Silver Linings Playbook||2012|
What I Have Realized:
I have watched & loved each & every one of these movies… but making this list has made me realize that most of these movies were made in the 90s & there have hardly been any good rom-coms that have come out of Hollywood in the past decade!
So I ask:
- Where are those clean, entertaining, funny, heart-warming romantic comedy movies that stole our hearts in the 90s?
- Where are the iconic stars such as Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Meg Ryan, Hugh Grant, Richard Gere who could carry such movies on their shoulder? Where are the real stars?
- Why has Hollywood become a factory producing only re-hashed aliens & superhero movies that have no freshness in them?
What I Wish For:
The coming soon list of Hollywood movies doesn’t give me any hope Oh, but how I wish this genre would come back. How I wish we got to see more of such innocent, sweet, day-brightening movies. How I wish that not every other movie was about some superhero/paranormal/alien… C’mon Hollywood are your listening?
